Shoulder Pain

Active Physiotherapy Jerusalem offers a comprehensive treatment regime for your shoulder pain.

The shoulder complex consists basically of three joints that act in a coordinated and synchronised manner to give the shoulder its large range of movement.  The three joints are the glenohumeral joint, sternoclavicular joint and the acromioclavicular joint.  The glenohumeral joint has minimal bony stability, but relies on muscles, ligaments and tendons that surround it for stability.  If excessive stress or repeated stress is placed on these tissues, damage and pain may occur.

Shoulder and arm pain may also develop due to neck problems.

How does shoulder pain occur?

People involved in sport may report that the pain start after an incident such as falling onto an outstretched arm, falling directly on to the shoulder itself or because of overuse. Commonly patients are unable to report a specific incident, but rather say it started gradually and now they have difficulty raising their arm, lying on the shoulder, turning the steering wheel, lifting weights or other activities.  The pain is often very severe and movement can become very restricted.

What should I do if I feel shoulder pain?

Accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan are necessary before giving treatment.  It is recommended to start treatment early to avoid further restriction and consequent progression to a “frozen shoulder”.

Physiotherapy treatment is started in the acute, painful phase to maintain or restore movement without causing pain.  Once the pain settles physiotherapy treatment progresses to include a strengthening and stabilising program to prevent reoccurrence of shoulder injury.

Some of the common conditions that can be helped with physiotherapy are:

  • Chronic shoulder pain

  • Bursitis

  • Shoulder arthritis

  • Labral tears

  • Rotator cuff tears

  • Acromioclavicular joint subluxations

  • Supraspinatus tendinitis

  • Following shoulder fracture, dislocation, or subluxation
