Active Exercise

The range of exercise methods and application is almost without limit.  The aim of active exercise is to get the body back to normal function without increase the chance of reinjury or causing increased pain. Fit tissues are better able to tolerate stress and prevent injury.

Knowing how and when to do exercise is critical in the restore health to damaged tissue and the physiotherapist will guide you through this process.  Some of the aims of exercise are to strengthen muscles, to correct muscle imbalances, to improve skill level of movement, to correct timing of muscle action, to increase nutrition to tissues.  Before giving exercise the physiotherapist should assess the patient’s problem in order that appropriate exercise is given.  Once the initial injury is no longer painful and specific exercise is tolerated, the amount and variety of exercise is increased so that the patient can return to an active lifestyle.
